In the late eighties, without any outside sponsorship or funding, we decided to produce an educational video for teens about the growing AIDS epidemic.

We wanted to do more than merely provide a checklist of how one could avoid the disease. We wanted instead to help teens understand that, despite their own powerful sense of invulnerability, AIDS was something to be taken very seriously. We felt the best way to get reach them was through peer-to-peer conversations with those who had contracted AIDS, or who were having to make changes in their lives because of the epidemic.

The resulting video is a series of ten short but powerful stories. Accompanied by a 36-page study guide, the video has been used by teen programs, schools and health departments throughout the US and Canada, as well as overseas. AIDS-Wise has won a number of international awards, including a Gold medal at the International Film and TV Festival of New York. (To arrange purchase or rental, contact New Day Films.)
